Not sure which type of fabric to choose for your new electric blinds? Whether you want complete privacy, need to reduce glare or want to keep a room cool during the summer, here is our quick guide to which blind fabrics are best for making your home feel comfortable, whatever time of year.
Can’t see the TV for the sunlight pouring into your living room or getting eye strain from looking at a bright computer screen in your home office? A screen fabric can help to reduce sunlight glare significantly. We have a range of screen fabrics with varying transparency – 1%, 3% and 5%. Generally speaking, a 3% screen fabric in a dark colour is the best combination to significantly reduce the glare and allow you to watch the TV or use your computer comfortably.
Maximise The View
If you want to reduce glare without blocking the view from your window, a dark screen fabric is the best choice. A 3% transparency will allow you to see through enough to make the most of the view, and a dark colour will absorb the light to improve the see-through characteristics further. Generally speaking, a dark coloured fabric gives the effect of a tinted window, where-as a lighter coloured fabric gives the impact of sheer drapes.
A light coloured fabric will help to keep a room cool by reflecting light away from the window. You may also opt for a more opaque screen fabric to prevent more light coming in through the windows and heating the room. The most efficient blind for keeping a room cool is a fully opaque blackout fabric but bare in mind that the view will also be entirely blocked.
If you want to keep a room as warm as possible, use a dark coloured fabric that will absorb lots of light and heat. Blackout fabrics are also an excellent way to prevent heat from escaping the room as they are a bit thicker than the screen fabrics.
The more opaque the fabric is, the more a blind will block out harmful UV rays. So, the best way to prevent furniture from getting damaged by the sun is to use a blackout fabric. However, this will block out all of the light and the views, so this may not be practical for rooms that you use during the day. Instead, choose a semi-transparent fabric. Up to 5% provides a good level of UV protection without blocking all of the light and the view.
If you want to reduce glare without making your home feel dark, opt for a light coloured fabric. A light colour will reflect more light into the room to make it appear brighter. You can also maximise the amount of light by choosing a 3 or 5% screen that is more see-through and will let more light in than a 1% screening fabric.
If privacy is your primary concern, full blackout fabric is the best option. Blackout fabric is especially popular for electric blinds in the bedroom where you want maximum privacy and a good night’s sleep. Furthermore, if you want to wake up to natural light, you can pre-programme your electric blinds to open at a set time, giving you the best of both worlds.
